With endorsement of the network – Cégep à distance presents its Brief to the Minister on expanding distance education to support development of the college network

Montréal, February 26, 2015 – Cégep à distance today made public its Brief to the Minister – La formation à distance, un élément-clé pour le développement du réseau collégial (Distance education, a key factor in the development of the college network)– submitted in December to the Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de la Science.

This brief presents the vision of the Cégep à distance advisory committee, endorsed by the Forum des directeurs généraux et des directrices générales des colleges, to promote expansion of distance education in support of the Quebec college network. It is part of the reflection spearheaded under the actions on the offer of college education.

“The findings of the Cégep à distance advisory committee, in concert with the college network, have convinced us that the development of distance education must be achieved with the leadership of the network, that it must be supported by a ministerial strategy and that it must be coordinated by an organization that combines expertise and trusted approaches, guarantors of the effectiveness of this type of education,” stated the director of Cégep à distance, Louis-René Dessureault.

To this end, the brief presents, with the endorsement of the Forum des directeurs généraux et des directrices générales des collèges, five recommendations targeting the maintenance and development of a concerted college-level distance education offer, especially technical education, across the Quebec territory, and a harmonization of distance education programs.

“By broadening the mandate and composition of its advisory committee, Cégep à distance can definitely play the role of a federative organization in distance education in Quebec. Cégep à distance and the college network are confident that this brief will be favourably received by the minister and that is why sub-committees and other partners are already continuing the reflection with the aim to implement the proposed model,” concluded the director.

For nearly 25 years, Cégep à distance has supported the technological and pedagogical innovation necessary for distance education in the twenty-first century thanks to its complementarity with colleges and the support services it offers to its various partners, ministries and higher education teaching institutions in Quebec.
