Distance education serving the regions

The Collège de Rosemont’s Cégep à distance, the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles and the Cégep de Matane signed a five-year agreement today to expand the offering of college-level distance education and to promote greater access to college studies for people in all the regions of Québec.

This agreement will lead to greater sharing of diverse pedagogical expertise and to the creation of innovative educational projects that lead to CEGEP diplomas. For example, certain discipline-specific courses from in-class programs at the Cégep de Matane or the Cégep de Gaspésie et des Îles will be broadcast live to other classrooms, to employer training sites or directly to the homes of other students. These students will be able to interact with the professor just like the students in a normal classroom. General education courses will be delivered using Cégep à distance distance education model.

The Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles and the Cégep de Matane have places available in several of their programs. Through this cooperative project, these places will be offered to students all across Québec. Adding distance education students will bolster the long-term viability of the programs for these CEGEPs and keep them accessible to the youth within their territories.

“This partnership increases access to education, an issue of major importance in the education network and one of the core values of our college,” proudly confirmed Patricia Hanigan, Director General of the Collège de Rosemont, the parent institution of Cégep à distance, which was mandated in 1991 to offer distance education to the college network. “Increased accessibility through the use of new technologies is a solution at the heart of our shared priority, which has always been students.”

“Here is a practical example that shows it is possible to combine the expertise of the regions with that of the urban centres, in the best interests of Québec,” declared Roland Auger, Director General of the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles.

As for Emery Béland, Director General of the Cégep de Matane, he feels that the agreement “establishes a solid reason for regional CEGEPs like ours to maintain a varied and interesting offer of programs for our local clientele, and an opportunity to expand it with the help of dedicated partners.”

Cégep à distance Director Viet Pham feels that the agreement perfectly reflects the objectives set out in his institution’s strategic plan. “Not only does it provide another means to maintain the educational offer in the regions, but it also allows us to diversify our course delivery models and expand the educational offer for the student community in Québec,” he explained.

With this partnership, Cégep à distance, renowned for its solid expertise in the CEGEP network, is meeting the CEGEPS’ needs for distance education and affirming its complementary role in the network.

About the Cégep de Matane

The Cégep de Matane has locations in Matane, in Amqui at the Centre matapédien d’études collégiales, and in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, where it offers adult education and professional development courses.  After experimenting with different types of distance education starting in the early 2000s and developing CISCO CCNA online certification, a world first, it created its virtual campus in 2006. Its three teletaught classes allow it to offer Comptabilité et gestion in collaboration with the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, and soon this course will be joined by Soins infirmiers and Sciences humaines, at the Ste-Anne-des-Monts training centre in the Haute-Gaspésie.
